About
Chuck Dorr went to art school. A 1973 graduate of the MEMPHIS ACADEMY OF ART, he not only met his wife on the first day of school 47 years ago, but also he received his BA in Painting. He later earned a teaching certificate and taught art for 2 years, before moving to NYC to pursue an ART career.
After many years in the restaurant service industry, as is the path for many hopeful creative types, he returned to school to pursue additional commercial avenues: typesetting, layout design, storyboarding, greeting cards, and editorial illustration assignments.
By a series of fortunate events and meeting the right people, he became manager in a top-flight photographer’s studio, eventually becoming the photographer's representative for commercial work. He opened his own downtown firm and had a great 25-year run representing over 120 of the best talents in the industry. Chuck was always just near the left of being creative.
After 25 years he moved on to revisit his love of gardening. His knowledge of plants, years in the NYC metropolitan area, and strong design sense formed the foundation for a new career in landscape design in Brooklyn, NY, including Dig, a highly acclaimed small but beautiful retail store of indoor and outdoor plants and planters. The landscape business continues to flourish.
Chuck is now happily retired and has begun to re-explore his artistic chops with this latest set of paintings and drawings. He delights in exploring layers, textures, color, and mediums including collage, photographs, watercolor, and pencil.
